We give thanks to families who fill their homes with music. That’s how Lowdown Brown was raised in Indiana, where his parents moved from Alabama. The first thing his mother brought into their new home was a piano. His father gave him his first guitar at age six, a gift that not only set him on his path as a musician but also made him whole.
A new job brought him to Houston where he found community and great friends in the music clubs where he joined jam sessions and made a name for himself as a blazingly talented guitarist. He credits players like R.L. Burnside, B.B. King, Chet Atkins and T-Bone Walker for his style and has seen his name in lights opening for Sister Sledge, ZZ Hill, Johnny Taylor and Bobby Bland.
Lowdown comes to the festival through the Music Maker Foundation, which supports the below-the-radar musicians we love. It is a cause we, in turn, support by booking these authentic artists in an environment of an incredible, music-loving community. Here’s how Mr. Brown sees it. “The thing about music, to me, is that it’s a way to bring people together and get them on the same frequency. Most people come to listen to music to have fun and dance; it’s a way to unify people. Music is what we have in common.”
